During his first term in office members of the LOFTE network fought against cruel policies proposed by President Trump. These proposals including eliminating certain programs that help low income people would have had devastating effects on the people we serve. In 2025 similar proposals have been made and we are actively working on ways to fight back with allies across the country.
On May 30th, 2025, The Trump Administration released its FY26 Budget Proposal and it was marked up by the Transportation and HUD (THUD) subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. The budget proposed to replace all federal rental assistance (Section 8 vouchers, Public Housing, and Project Based Section 8) with Block Grants to the States with 44% less funding; impose a two year limit on how long “able-bodied” tenants can stay in their homes; and eliminate Fair Housing enforcement. The final markup of the HUD Budget Proposal will be on July 14th
The House THUD Appropriations Subcommittee voted on July 14th to cut only $939 million from HUD's current funding levels, much better than Trump's request of a $26 billion (43%) cut to HUD rental housing. They also rejected Trump's proposed Block Grant proposal.
